  4.     I'm a certified public accountant who defected to teaching in
  5. mid-career (EDUCATION, Feb. 13). I agree that some educators are
  6. prejudiced against people like me because of our lack of formal
  7. teacher training, but these critics have never entered my classroom
  8. and have no idea what my instruction methods are. The students
  9. know. One of mine asked, "You didn't take any of those
  10. teacher-training courses, did you?"

  12.     "No," I said. "Is that bad?"
  13.  
  14.     "It's good," she replied. "Your classes are interesting."
  15.  
  16.     I teach accounting, so I consider that quite a compliment.

  22.     The experts make it sound as if those of us who have been in
  23. the education profession from the start live in a vacuum and can't
  24. offer the "life experiences" that mid-career people can. I've been
  25. teaching for 19 years, and I guarantee a fresh, vital lesson to my
  26. students every day.
